Fire crews in southwest France are battling a massive blaze four times the size of Paris. Temperatures are forecast to climb above 104 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday, complicating efforts.

French authorities ordered 4,000 more people evacuated from tourist sites along its Atlantic coast, widening what may be France's largest peacetime evacuation.

A wildfire the size of Philadelphia is pushing near the French city of Bordeaux, where temperatures could soar into triple digits in the coming days.

"We will not be affording them the benefit of listening to their politicized drivel until they renounce their condescending and disrespectful rhetoric," said a U.S. official.

Hundreds of thousands remained evacuated as huge wildfires burned in France and Spain. A race against time saw firefighters trying to make progress before a forecast surge in temperatures.

NBC News spoke with residents as some of Europe’s most severe wildfires in decades threaten the Atlantic coast, including the tourist hub of Bordeaux.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said the wildfire situation is the "toughest since the Second World War."
